The concept of vaginal rejuvenation
Female genital cosmetic surgery is a broad term that includes many procedures aimed at improving genital appearance and/or sexual functioning. These procedures are performed by both Plastic surgeons and Ob/Gyn surgeons and include vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, vulvar lipo sculpturing, hymenoplasty and G-spot amplification.
Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is considered one of the most controversial surgeries because it involves procedures to change the appearance of the vagina and decrease its diameter (width). These procedures are referred to as vaginal rejuvenation, vaginal restoration or vaginoplasty.
The issue here is that there’s no one “right” way for your vagina to look but society often has many of us thinking otherwise. Some blame this insecurity and the rise of vaginal rejuvenation surgeries on porn which often promotes an ideal of a small, pink, “tucked-in” labia. These procedures are costly, invasive and are mostly a matter of preference not necessity.
That being said, childbirth, hormonal changes and the natural aging process all can cause a loss of strength in the pelvic and vaginal muscles. Vaginal dryness caused by decreases in natural lubrication, can also occur and negatively impact sexual function and self esteem. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is appropriate for some people in certain situations but there are also simple and less risky methods available to improve common vaginal problems.
What else can be done?
Kegel and pelvic floor exercises are great options to strengthen your vaginal muscles. The vagina is a resilient and powerful part of a woman’s body. These exercises can improve elasticity and help strengthen your vaginal muscles, especially as we age or after pregnancy.
